In the CRRC VOL2 it has a drawing of a federal poncho with a button at the neck opening i was wondering does anyone have any detailed information on this I.E. type of button used ,is the button sewn with a buttonhole stitch, is this a field add on or issued feature. Any detailed information would be well received thank you

Could something like this be what you are referring to?

No, this is specific to poncho's not groundsheets. There actually appears to be a button sewn to the opening to close it when not in use. The patent buttons sold through private sources are not what i am interested in.

Reference, page 142 plate ll.26 union army waterproofs PONCHO in the CRRC Vol 2, there is a button sewn to the opening of a poncho not a gum blanket with a patent button. Also, if you look at page 76 of Tenting Tonight (time life series) you will see the button hole on the PONCHO at the neck opening.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I would be very surprised if no one else has spotted this.

        Re: poncho button

        Martyn,
as far as I could make out from pics the button was sewn to the poncho and the button hole was simply cut in the material. As fraying would not take place due to the rubberized surface that would work.

            Re: poncho button

Unfortunately, the original button on that poncho is missing. The threads that held the button are there, as well as the button hole, but the button itself is MIA.
