  • CS single bag knapsack from a Federal Double bag

    Hi,

I did some searching of the AC site for a thread that I read a while ago but I could not find it. I seem to recall a thread about a CS knapsack that appears to have been made form an old Federal double bag, does anyone else rember that thread?

    Thank you,

I believe that there is a surviving Confederate haversack, attributed to South Carolina I believe, that started out as a Federal double bag knapsack.

    Hope that helps,

Here is the link to the haversack Garrett is referring to. This is the only reference I can think of as well. If there is reference to a CS single bag being fashioned out of a federal knapsack I would love to see it as well.

Let us know if the link helps.

There is another interesting haversack made out of a knapsack in the Michigan Historical Museum. It began as a double bag knapsack, was converted into a haversack by a Confederate, and again re-purposed as a saddle bag by a Federal cavalryman. I'm not aware of any field made CS knapsacks being made from a Federal knapsack.

Civil War Campaigner Magazine mentioned the NC Haversack conversion in its June/July 2010 issue. The article was on the Confederate Infantry Private during the Overland Campaign in May 1864 and featured a gentleman from the Liberty Rifles in the pictures in the article and he carried a reproduction of that haversack.
