1861 Michigan Issued 5-Button Coats

Several 1861 photographs of enlisted soldiers of the 9th Michigan Infantry have them wearing what would appear to be an early sack coat with 5-buttons, a standing collar much like an enlisted man's frock coat and shoulder epaulettes. There is also a external pocket on the left side of their jacket. The regiment was also issued dark blue trousers initially.

Any ideas?

Very neat image. Full of things we do not associate with for early war Federals. Heck, toss in the Lorenz and you have a unique impression.

Great collection of early Michigan jackets. Obviously a trend with state issue jackets. Do we know who was commissioned by the state to produce these jackets? And since you're working on reproductions, are you intending on making the 5 button jackets? Any units portraying early war Michigan units needs to have these.
