    Hello,

Perhaps it is a remnant of a canteen?I have seen some of these type of images that appear to be "staged" with props placed by the photographer, rather than "candid" shots of the soldier and accouterments as they lay.Just my .02.

From what I have read, it is generally considered to be the remains of a drum canteen, which has been modified either for use as a mess tin or entrenching tool-- or both!
