A few questions

Howdy pards
Im looking to make a knapsack and just wanting to know what oz leather i should get and where to find the best stuff for the job.
And also im lookin to make a flag and just wanting to know what kind of silk to get and where should i get it from.

Cain't help you with the knapsack, never made one. A flag is a different story. What kind of flag are you proposing to make? Different flags were made of different fabrics. Yankee colors were usually made from silk. Confederate flags vary from wool to cotton, to flannel to bunting, and silk as well.

I'm not a military person, but the first step is always to research what fellows in your specific unit/region were issued at that point of the conflict. There are government specifics for the vast majority of issued gear, and that should give you the specs on the weights of materials, etc.
