  • Winter Quarters

With the colder weather events around the corner and after reading some books where winter quarters were mentioned, I have decided I want to attempt at making a winter quarters. (scenario permitting of course). I'm at the point of brainstorming ideas of how to do this, while keeping the facts in mind that I won't be in it all winter and it'll need to be able to be taken apart in sections for transportation. I'm currently thinking a mix of hardtack crate pieces and fence railing, with a tongue-and-grove inside on the corners.
If anyone done this before and/or would have tips or ideas to share, it'd be appreciated.

Here are some we did back in the 1980s for Petersburg. The huts were built in sections at home and transported to the park where we bolted them together. Some didn't get the front on as you can see.

Rob, do you happen to know of any details of how it's constructed, or know of any pictures I could reference? Thanks.

I was overseas when they were constructing them, and they built several variations. If you can't make up for the event, I'll be sure to take some pictures while I'm there.

Don't forget about the winter structures in Newfane, NY used for the "Winter of 64" event, but they are more permanent buildings.

Hello- Since this thread has to do with "how to" event hosting/design, I have moved it to the respective location here on the forums. Thanks!

Ryan, the event at the Wade House is in two weeks. Looks like it wouldn't be that bad of a drive for you. Come check it out and get some ideas. I was working on them yesterday and trust my they are top notch.

The men from the 3rd ANV have done a great winter quarters site at Montpelier VA. I only snagged one picture from the joint event with the 3rd US Infantry this past winter, but it gives a general idea. I know the guys did lots of work erecting each one.

                    Gentlemen,
I took a number of photographs of the Winter Quarters at Wade House last September and I would be happy to share what I have. May I inquire if there is a preferred way to attach photos? There are a number of them.

Thanking you in advance for your help,

Additional images from Winter Quarters, Wade House, Green Bush, WI Sept 2014 I apologize for not having many images that show construction or the overall quarters. I didn't want to disrupt the boys by walking into their buildings and shooting away. The location is very narrow and makes it difficult to photograph the entire street. Perhaps, with their permission, I shall do so in 2 weeks.

Elaine, thank you very much for all the pics! While I'm working more towards a "stockaded tent" design, these will definitely be helpful to me and have already given me a few ideas.

                              Hi Ryan,
We've built five wood shanty's that we cover with shelter tents. We typically set them up at Minooka and occasionally on an indoor event. We used cedar siding for two of them with rough dimensional lumber for the interior structure and the other three have fencing boards for the siding. They nail together pretty easily and simulate the look of what you see in the pictures from before Nashville. I've attached the only picture I can find at the moment. I'll get some better ones for you soon. If your coming out to Minooka you'll be able to see them, I'm pretty sure we are bringing them out again. Please excuse the modern children in the image...just couldnt get my kids in period dress that year.
