  • Interesting Confederate Cavalryman

    Pvt D.A. McElwain, Co A, 2nd Mississippi State Troops Cavalry. Enlisted in Sol Streets band of Partisan Rangers in December 1862, which became Company A in April 1863. Captured on May 2nd 1863 near Ripley MS. Released from Ft. Delaware June 11th 1865. Note the Whitney revolver.

    Interesting pic indeed, Will. From what I can see, he looks to be totally civilian attired except for the Whitney.

    On another note, have you ever run across any returns on the 16th Confederate/12th Mississippi Cavalry? I'm curious as to how they were outfitted and armed.

      Here is what I have found after a quick search. Records are pretty sketchy.

      Issued June 4th 1864:

      300 Cartridge Boxes
      300 Cap Pouches
      30 Cavalry Sabers and Belts
      163 Saddle Blankets-Moss
      21000 Musket Ball Cartridges cal .69
      2000 Enfield Rifle Cartridges cal. .58
      2000 Miss Rifle Cartridges cal .54
      3000 Miss Rifle Cartridges cal .54 for carbines

      Also what was to become Company A was issued 100 sabers in January 1864. Most of the companies of the regiment had been organized in 1863 as part of the "supporting force" for the conscription bureau, then put together as a regiment in April/May 1864.
