Splice eye

When using hemp rope as a lead with a halter bridle, is the eye splice made around the halter ring or is it simply used to feed the rope through in order to make the lead detachable? Is the lead woven around the halter ring or not is the best way to ask that I guess.

I want to say that either someone here or maybe on Ken Knopp's website there were a few pictures of troops with rope leads and they were spliced to the ring. I can't say for sure thought, but a search for pictures would be the best bet. I think you would be able to see it was spliced.
