This is a aerial view of the core of the fort as it appeared during service. While there are some buildings present that were not there in 1862, this gives you a good idea of the footprint of the fort. Not pictured? As many as 75 outlying buildings that acted as warehouses, shops and more. Even in 1862, just six years after construction, this was a massive site.
So why aren't there any structures on site now? When the army ended operations at Fort Randall in 1892, the buildings were sold at public auction. The local civilian population swooped in and bought up every window, door and every board-foot of lumber for use on their farms and homes. The only thing they left were the cellar holes.
