  • Through a Pathless Country: 1863 Campaign Across Dakota - June 9-11, 2023

160th Reenactment and Living History of the 1863 Sibley Campaign through Dakota prairie- June 9-11, 2023.

An immersive recreation of one company of the 6th Minnesota Infantry during the 1863 Sibley Expedition as they made their way across modern North Dakota. The emphasis will be recreating the campaign elements including marching, field rations, picket and entrenching on the prairie, etc.

This event is representing a volunteer infantry unit raised in the summer of 1862 as the “Sigel Guards”. The VAST majority of these men were immigrants from the Germanic States and Central Europe; some had even seen service in those European Armies, including one German veteran of Waterloo! From 1862 until 1864 the regiment would serve under Col. William Crooks. The summer and fall of 1862 saw Company E and most of the 6th Minnesota involved in relief actions of forts and anti-guerrilla warfare against the Dakota. By the time they entered modern North Dakota, the men had marched roughly 200 miles

The event will be held on the Fort Ransom State Park
. Attendees should expect to march roughly 5-8 miles over the course of the weekend and live self sufficiently with little to no modern convivences.

We will be recreating the march very close to the actual route of Sibley's army as well as their campsites.
