  • A public commendation for Danny McCoslin

If there was ever a man who deserves some kind of award for Duty Above and Beyond the Call as a living historian, it is Danny McCoslin, the man who first envisioned and then organized the Mansfield Preservation March. At the risk of embarrassing he and wife Erica (they will read this for the first time here) I would like to publicly thank both of them for making Mansfield a reality, despite life changes and difficulties that would make most folks bail.

    In the past 2 months:

    1. Danny lost his job
    2. Erica is newly pregnant
    3. Had to sell their house and move across Texas, forcing Erica to give up her job as well.
    4. Spent hundreds of $ of their own money helping put this together and put 6000 miles on the truck just driving over to Mansfield and back.
    5. Quickly reorganized the battalion when a group of reenactors pulled out. We are now much stronger than before, with 75 of the best TMD and western living historians (including 5 Brits!) commanded by Frank Aufmuth, all united in a common cause in one authentic battalion.

    oh yeah...

    6. Danny just found a new job - in Iraq. He leaves for a year 2 weeks from now...with very little chance to see the birth of his unborn child but an excellent chance to be shot at...

If you see him at the event, shake his hand. Needless to say, his leadership and dogged determination has inspired the rest of us greatly.

Sorry Pig Pen, I thought folks ought to know what Texans can do :)

      When it rains it pours

Well Danny was in a terrible accident today - t-boned and flipped in his truck by some kids who were speeding. Big gash in his head and pretty banged up - we are either going to dump in the wagon or try out the authentic stretcher we are bringing with the hospital steward on the march. Purple Heart to go with that commendation...

      get well hard head!

          Cody:

Before you volunteer to cary Danny and all his stuff...you may want to double-check your weight to room issue. Danny has been working out lately and his is back to "fightin" form!! May want to make sure you have enough room for all the stuff and Pig Pen.

Besides, Danny would go through this event..even if we had to drag him! :D

HEY DANNY...let us know how we can help you. It looks like it is going be a while before we see that crooked grin again, so chime in and tell us if there is anything we can do for you.

          Cheers to Danny!

            Doug et all,
I can say with certainty that all three Upstarts will happily volunteer to assist Danny with gear or whatever. If it hadn't been for Danny, and all the guys at Mansfield, Cody and I wouldn't have been so fired up to begin changing our primary impressions and diving into the Trans-Mississippi with both boots! Danny is truly an example of the old phrase "Lead, follow, or get the hell outta the way!!!"

Danny, thanks for all your hardwork and dedication.

            Take care bud,

                Amen!

Spoke to Danny today and although sore, he's in high spirits and cannot wait for the event.

To add to what Doug stated, Danny's selfless contributions will reap huge rewards for the preservation of the Mansfield battlefield....with the money that has been raised thru the raffle, various fund-raisers, and the small registration fee, we are anticipating making the largest 'reenactor' donation to the CWPT. Danny & Doug's contributions have also gained recognition and respect from some of our leaders, as Rep. Callegari (R-Katy) and Gov. Perry have publicly commended "The 15th Texas".

Danny, I have had the honor of serving with you for the last year and a half, and we've often discussed how important Mansfield is to us (Both having ancestors who fought there) and how we hope to honor their legacy...My friend, you have done well....A sincere thanks to you.

I just built a travois. We will pull Danny along if need be. No leaving our wounded behind! Get well, Danny.

Re: A public commendation for Danny McCoslin

I have known Danny for years. Im sure this injury compares nothing to the thrill of finding that patch of poison ivy while visting the sinks a few years back. I still cringe thinking about that one.
Seriously our battalion had a muster a few months ago. As we huffed and puffed on the drill field up the road came Danny and Phil Graf they had been out marching about four months in advance just to get ready for this event. You can measure some men on what they believe in and what cost they are willing to pay to achieve it. Some men throw money around to achieve their goals, others spend countless hours of their own time to do the same. The third group organizes others to do the above. Then finally their are the one half of one percent of folks who can do al three. Danny is the one half of one percent.
Dan had the dream, knew the dream could be achieved and is almost there. The last part is up to us men, lets not ruin Danny dream.
