Re: 89th Illinois
Gang - one very interesting first person factoid is that Illinois troops were prohibited from voting in the 1862 Elections, while Wisconsin and Iowa were allowed. This infuriated the Republican Party as the theory was most of the boys who joined up from the Land of Lincoln were likely Republican, costing the candidates many votes. We are a week shy of the election so it would have been a subject of conversation.
The other biggee is the Emancipation Proclamation, the preliminary draft having been floated in public. Much debate on that as a war aim, to be sure.

Re: 89th Illinois
I actually served as Bugler for Charles Truman Hotchkiss descendants at the rededication of his grave marker about 6 years ago. A reenactor living in Arizona is his direct descendant, he even made a VHS movie on it. He's one of 13 ACW Generals buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, which is north of Chicago (south of Evanston) along the old Milwaukee Road tracks (currently used by METRA and the Union Pacific Rail Road). I pass by everyday.Originally posted by Terry Sorchy View Post
One of the pledging monies for soldiers dependents Railroads that the 89th IL was nicknamed after, eventually became the Milwaukee Road.
