    ______________________________________________

Following Sherman’s 1864 Christmas Gift of Savannah, Ga. to Pres. Lincoln, his command began to push North through the backwaters of the Carolinas, culminating in the Battle of Bentonville, on March 19, 20, & 21.

To counter the Federal movement, Lee summoned Gen Joseph E. Johnston out of his short-lived retirement, to take command of the Army of Tennessee in order to stop Sherman’s movement. At this time the AOT was widely scattered through the Carolinas, and were being pressed not only by Sherman’s advance from the South, but also from movements of the combined forces of Gen. Alfred H. Terry's Provisional Corps and Gen. John Schofield's XXIII Corps .

As the Army of Tennessee maneuvered to mass forces, there were numerous small engagements in the backwaters of North Carolina.

Backwater - 1865 event at Land Between the Lakes Recreational Area replicates these settings for those engagements taking place in March of 1865.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Registration will open commencing 1 August, and will close on 20 January.

    2. Each individual will contacted via e-mail (or by phone if no e-mail available) to confirm receipt of the registration form, and payment. Payment must be received with registration. If sending PayPal, also e-mail the registration form, annotating the date that paypal was used.

    3. We will not post the registration lists. Each Commander will be provided with the separate Command Rosters as registrations are received (Updated weekly… hopefully on Sunday afternoon). The Commander will also receive updated E-mail lists from the registrations. The Commanders will then be responsible for communicating directly to the men in their commands.

    4. The areas to be used are designated by the U.S. Forrestry Service as Non-Equestrian. Horses are restricted from these areas, therefore there will be no mounted participants for this event.

    5. This is a Military only event . We have no plans for any civilian participants.

    6. This will be a Controlled Maneuver Event. The Commanding Officer of each command will have Friday night to issue rations and organize/drill there men. Pre-dawn on Saturday, each commander will receive written orders from this higher command which will require him to maneuver his subordinate commands and accomplish his assigned missions. The Commanders have no prior knowledge pertaining to their march routes, or what their objectives will be. Nor will they know where their opposition is starting from, or what his objectives are. As the event develops, the event coordinators will provide supplemental orders to the commanders as needed.

    7. March at the LBL site can be harsh, wet and cold. The terrain is challenging with the trails having numerous short, but at times steep peeks and valleys. Be prepared for both the climate, and the terrain.

There are two earlier discussion threads about this event here on the A/C forums. Each of these earlier threads have great information, and can be found here:

    Brian,

Is there a specific Confederate regiment being portrayed or is it just the brigade? Thanks.

      Re: Backwater 1865

During this time, the Brigade was commanded by Captain John Bonner (Colonel Olmstaead had received permission to return to Georgia to gather up the recent Deserters.. which he did.. 500 or so, but he did not return with them until after the Battle of Bentonville). The last official record of all men present and accounted for in Mercer's Brigade listed men effective for duty for the entire Brigade at 319. This was on December 21st of 1864 at Columbia, Tenn. and this is before the Brigade retreated through there home state towards N. Carolina. Desertions after the Battle of Nashville, and during their move through Georgia reduced their numbers even further, but no official count has been found after this date.

For this event, the Brigade will have separate maneuver elements representing the Regiments of that Brigade. During the Last few months of the war, these Regiments were commanded by Captains, and their numbers were about what we anticipate to register for this event, so we hope to have a good representation of the actual numbers that were likely present in the ranks in 1865 for the entire Brigade.

On Dec. 21 of 1864. these were the numbers of effectives in each Regt. of Mercer's Brigade:

      First Georgia Volunteers 41 effectives
      Fifty-fourth Georgia 111 effectives
      Fifty-seventh Georgia 65 effectives
      Sixty-third Georgia 102 effectives

The Brigades strength was 1/3 that of a Regiment.

Again... this was four months prior to our event time, and before the units were depleted even further during their retreat from the Battle of Nashville, and their subsequent move east towards the Carolinas.

          Brian,

I like the way you're keeping your cards close to your vest on this. The people we portray did not know the details of history before it happened anymore than I know what will happen to me this week!

This bodes well for the event!

          Thanks!!

Thanks for the assist. I think this will make things a little easier to organize the BN's as we will not micro-manage to a extent the companies on there numbers/members.

                              Backwater Confederate Command Change

Due to an unfortunate conflict in real world scheduling, Pat Craddock has had to step aside as overall Commander for the Confederate element at the Backwater 1865 event.

His next senior Officer has stepped up to senior command.

Tripp Corbin will now be the senior commander of the Confederate Forces.

What makes this interesting, is that the guiding impression for the Confederates for this event is Mercer's Brigade, which historically, their Brigade Commander, Col. Olmstead took furlough just prior to the Carolinas Campaign to gather up stragglers and deserters from their home counties in Georgia. This left the senior Captain in the Brigade (Captain to be the acting commander during the period our event is portraying.
