shelter half or gum blanket?

I don't have a shelter half or a gum blanket for backwaters. I'm trying to get both but in the case of me not being able to afford both, which should I go for first?

I've of course had both for years upon years...but I've only used the shelter half maybe twice but I've pulled out that gum blanket at every single event, guarenteed.

A gum blanket (or oil cloth if Confederate) is a basic part of your kit. It is a layer of protection between you and the wet ground when you sleep (aside from a myriad of other uses).

They weigh about the same. They are about the same size. Both can cover you...

... but one resists water and can double as a waterproof blanket you can wrap yourself in when it gets wet and cold. It retains your body heat better than a blanket to keep you warm when you aren't moving at night when you are sleeping. It can keep your gear drier in a downpour too:

Gum blanket. :D
