I have not found any accounts as to the individual reaction by the Soldiers of the 8th Kansas specifically regarding this. Quantrill and his Bushwhackers had been raiding towns in Kansas since 61. Lawrence by far the worst of these. I can tell you that the 8th Kansas was originally formed as a homeguard specifically for protecting Kansas from these attacks and others from Indians etc. Many men deserted due to them being sent South on campaign and were upset about leaving their State early on. referenced in http://books.google.com/books?id=sip...ed=0CC8Q6AEwAA
Quantrill's raid on Lawrence was August 21st 1863. Harpers Weekly did not have an article about it until September 27th 1863
You Found It! A fascinating Civil War Harper's Weekly featuring a story and picture of Quantrell's Raiders
Around the time period we are portraying...post Chickamauga. I imagine letters from home would tell more as well as local papers, if they were able to get mail, we know supplies from Steveenson were cut off, mail may have been an issue as well.
As a sidebar, not all of the men in the regiment were from Lawrence.
