  • The Occupation of New Madrid

March 9-11, 2012 - The last of the New Madrid Trilogy will mark the 150th anniversary of the Federal occupation of New Madrid.

New Madrid has fallen and is occupied by John Pope's forces. Island No. 10 just upstream will not fall for another few weeks.

We will portray troops assigned as Pope's bodyguard and will be in garrison at the house Pope used for his headquarters. Events will revolve around the typical day of troops with some patrols being sent out looking for stray Rebs and guerillas. Civilians can portray New Madrid citizens, some of which were held captive and sent to Gratiot Prison in St. Louis, while others just tried to survive under the eyes of an enemy conqueror.

        Rick,

Not too many but you can be one if you want. Most of them had evacuated from New Madrid and moved up to Island #10. There were still a few around that missed the big move-out though. Scattered Confeds plus some of Jeff Thompson's State Guard cav. was still in the area.

A few others and myself are going to try to make this one. The first two installments fall on some pretty bad dates for me, but this one is looking good.

The dates for the Occupation of New Madrid will be the weekend of March 9,10 and 11 which will be 150 years to the day when Federal forces occupied the town. There will be an encampment and living history at the house used by John Pope as his headquarters plus some other activites that I hope will be of interest to participants.

Is this still on the books? If so, I may be able to get some folks to go.

I've had some folks express interest in returning to New Madrid. The event will go on and I will open registration soon.

Re: The Occupation of New Madrid

I plan on opening registration on Oct. 1. Since I like to try and help people out as much as I can, there will be no registration fee to take part but you must be registered so we know who is planning on attending. Unit portrayed will be Co. C, 47th Illinois who served as Popes's escort at the time.

For those of you that would like to read up a little on what happened here prior to the event, there are some sources out there that you should be able to tap into.

Island No. 10 and the New Madrid siege were sandwiched in between Ft. Donelson and Shiloh so they tend to get overshadowed if not downright ignored by many writers.

Of course the OR's will have plenty of good stuff on this area but you can also try the following:

Vol. 1 of Battles and Leaders
Much of this deals with the naval aspect of Island No. 10 but the Orders of Battle are there also.

The Civil War Reminiscences of General M. Jeff Thompson, by himself of course.
Thompson was a very colorful fellow and commanded MO State Guard troops throughout the war. Sometimes called 'the Swampfox of the Confederacy', his writings can be somewhat embellished but it is still good info to read.

Army Life of an Illinois Soldier by Charles Wills
Wills was in the 7th Illinois Cavalry at New Madrid. His diary entries are an excellent record of the everyday activity that was happening here. I highly recommend it.

Island No. 10, Struggle for the Mississippi Valley by Larry Daniel and Lynn Bock
This is the only book I know of that is devoted to what happened here. If you only read one thing, this should be it. It is easy to read and is only about 160 pages. Amazon and other vendors should carry it and you should be able to find it through interlibrary loan.

Thought I'd go ahead and open up registration. Here is a form attached. I am also working on a website which should be up in a few days. The form will be there also.

Remember, there is not registration fee but you must register. There will be no walk-ons.

Just a bump for the event. It doesn't cost you anything to register so go ahead and send them in if you plan on attending.

Instead of a website we have a Facebook page for the event that you can check out for information here: https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/280372681982251/
