  • Prelude to Gettysburg, 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Aldie, June 14-16th

    Gentlemen,

The 1st Maine Cavalry is hosting a cavalry campaign event to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the battles of Aldie, Middleburg and Upperville, in Loudoun County, VA.

This event will hopefully include the dedication of the new 1st Maine Cavalry monument at the battlefield at Aldie. It will also include a rededication of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry monument. The event will commence with a skirmish in the village of Aldie, followed by a recreation of the battle at the Furr house along the Snickersville Turnpike. Following those skirmishes we'll have the monument ceremonies, all of which will be open to the public.

Once the public portion of the event is over, we will commence with the march to the battlefield of Upperville. The march will be 15 or so miles both cross country and along dirt roads on ground that is all original battlefield and is largely as it appeared during the Civil War. We will have some skirmishing along the way as well as a bivouac in the field on Saturday night. The event will conclude with a skirmish for the public in Upperville on the original battlefield.

The event will be entirely a campaign event, on original ground. There will be high but obtainable standards for participants, and those standards will be enforced. There is also space at this event for some CS artillery and a small number of US infantry who are willing to march 15 miles or so cross country. Take care,
    Tom Craig
