  • Principles for the Advanced Guard; or Picket Duty 101

The general plan for this three day event is to replicate the actions of 23-25 November 1863. Between the Bushy Knob advance on 23 November and seizure of Missionary Ridge on 25 November, the armies performed picket duty. In an effort to replicate those three days, expect to be performing some round the clock picket duty. They did it. Don't be surprised if we're doing it, too.

Here's a link to discussion in the a/c folder about the 2016 Picket Post organized by 40 Rounds events. This link contains ways of downloading my booklet on the principles of the advanced guard aka Picket Duty 101 :

In preparing this booklet, I tried to include as much WHY along with the HOW of picket duty. Below is the index found in the past page of the booklet :

    PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION
    A. Duties of Sentinels
    B. Duties of the Outposts
    C. Duties of the Reserve
    D. Duties of Officers

    PART II: POSTING AND POSITIONS

    PART III: PATROLS

    PART IV : FORMATIONS
    A. Guard Mount
    B. Challenges and Grand Rounds

PART V : ORGANIZATION OF INFANTRY
    A. Posts of Company Officers and NCO’s
    B. Manner of Forming the Company

PART VI : MANUAL OF ARMS
    A. Support Arms
    B. Present Arms
    C. Arms Port
    D. Parade Rest

PART VII : MANUAL OF THE SWORD FOR OFFICERS
    The Carry
    The Present
    There's some good stuff here.
