  • Warlike: Portraying a regiment correctly

One of the neat things about portraying an entire regiment correctly like we're doing at WARLIKE Along the Rapidan, is that we have to ask lots of questions about how things were actually done, find the answers, and recreate those aspects down to the little details--in this case the Ambulance Corps. The Confederate Congress authorized the temporary establishment of an Infirmary Corps "when an engagement is expected," to be organized by the Assistant Surgeon and to be comprised of at least one, but no more than two members of each company. Each man was to turn in his weapon and be provided with a badge to distinguish himself. Each pair of detailed men was given one litter, several bandages, tourniquets, and sponges, and four splints. They advanced behind the main body of the regiment are were directed by the Assistant Surgeon. We promise you'll see this done correctly in May--no hokey battle with a couple yokels and a stretcher here!
