  • Warlike: A Soldier Life Experience

For many, the adage about "getting beyond the gear" or "knowing the man behind the uniform" is just lip service--because you looked up what county the company you're portraying was from, somehow that makes your grandma quilt acceptable. We go about it a different way. At Warlike Along the Rapidan, one of the many ways we're going to help participants better understand the 13th Virginia in the first week of May 1864, in striving to provide a "soldier life experience," is to make sure every participant has a piece of appropriate reading material in their pocket. Be it a tract that had just been published and reached the army that week handed to you by the chaplain, the new songster or recently published novel you share with your pards, or the latest edition of a popular Southern periodical or Yankee newspaper you can pick up from the sutler, we want to make sure that every participant, while lounging around camp, during a break on the march, or while trying to stay awake at an outpost, can read the same words that a member of the 13th did, while doing the same thing you are, exactly 155 years before.
