  • Warlike Along the Rapidan - shoes!

"General Pegram came and drilled the regiment for 2 hours and was much pleased with us. He said that if we fought half as well as we drilled we would pass muster. We told him we would fight better. I had brigade drill for three hours in the afternoon. I had on a pair of new shoes and they gave me fits. All our shoes are made by men here." -George Peyton, Co. A, 13th Virginia, April 21, 1864.

Receipts show that, throughout the early months of 1864, Confederate soldiers in the ANV's camps along the Rapidan could draw expensive English shoes, less expensive "Confederate shoes," or turn their shoes in for repair by infantrymen detailed to the task. At Warlike Along the Rapidan, several skilled cobblers will complete the 13th's last minute shoe repairs before picking their muskets up and joining the march.
