Re: Tobacco plugs/ twists
Are the modern tobacco twists sold in store today authentic? I was at Fort Donelson last year and admired the twists they had in a display. The Ranger told me that they get them from the local Piggly Wiggly. They give them to them when they're out of date. She even gave me a few, which I lost in customs re-entering Australia, cause they weren't sure what to class them as....duhhh. Seems they're rather plentiful in central Tenneessee. Since I don't partake of the weed in any fashion myself, I have no idea of their actual period authenticity.

Re: Tobacco plugs/ twists
Yes provided they are NOT the sweetened variety which don't burn...at all! If you end up with the sweet kind you can scrub them with some hot water and let them dry...they should be ok. Hornet is good to smoke and RC Owen has one that is Dark Fired which is probably the best/most period.Originally posted by lojafan View PostYou can also smoke twist tobacco as well correct?Regards,

Re: Tobacco plugs/ twists
Yes basically...although they may be made from Burley which wasn't really around until after the war from what I understand (it's a mutation of Virginia Tobacco). Most tobacco was US grown, Virginia which was dark fired, and quite strong.Originally posted by D.W. Scalf View PostAre the modern tobacco twists sold in store today authentic?
I like Gawith & Hoggarth Brown Rope/twist from England; it is authentic and good!
