    ‘Meet Abraham Lincoln’ programs to be held
    at Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center

    National Park Service winter lecture series continues Feb. 13-14;

    Adams County residents invited to Community Appreciation Day Feb. 15

    Gettysburg, Pa. (Feb. 9, 2010) — In honor of Presidents Day, the Gettysburg Foundation invites visitors to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center on Saturday, Feb. 13 and Sunday, Feb. 14 to “Meet Abraham Lincoln,” portrayed by Gettysburg resident James Getty. Getty will offer brief programs about the Gettysburg Address from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. both days and will be available to greet visitors and pose for photographs before and after each Gettysburg Address program. There is no charge for these programs.

    The National Park Service will also offer free, one-hour indoor programs on “Perspectives of the Battle of Gettysburg” as part of its winter lecture series on Saturday, Feb. 13 and Sunday, Feb. 14. Programs will begin at 1:30 p.m. on both days in the Ford Motor Company Fund Education Center inside the Museum and Visitor Center. Visit www.nps.gov/gett for program topics.

    The Gettysburg Foundation and the National Park Service are also pleased to invite Adams County residents to the second of four planned Community Appreciation Days in 2010 on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 15, 2010. On designated Community Appreciation Days, Adams County residents enjoy free tickets to the Cyclorama, Film and Museum Experience at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.

    The Museum and Visitor Center will be open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., with the first Cyclorama and A New Birth of Freedom film showing scheduled for 8:30 a.m.; the final show will be at 4 p.m. Due to the popularity of previous community events, Adams County residents are encouraged to arrive early; crowds are usually lightest between 8:30 – 10 a.m., and tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Advance reservations are not available for Community Appreciation Day tickets, and rain checks will not be available.) Local visitors should be prepared to show proof of residence, such as a driver’s license.

    Upcoming Community Appreciation Days in 2010 include a back-to-school day held in late August or early September and Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

    Gettysburg National Military Park is a unit of the National Park Service that preserves and protects the resources associated with the Battle of Gettysburg and the Soldiers’ National Cemetery, and provides an understanding of the events that occurred there within the context of American history. Information is available at www.nps.gov/gett.

    The Gettysburg Foundation is a private, non-profit educational organization working in partnership with the National Park Service to enhance preservation and understanding of the heritage and lasting significance of Gettysburg. The Foundation raised funds for and now operates the Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park, which opened in April 2008. In addition to operating the Museum and Visitor Center, the Foundation has a broad preservation mission that includes land, monument and artifact preservation and battlefield rehabilitation—all in support of the National Park Service’s goals at Gettysburg.
