  • "Old Carry"

Joshua Chamberlain wrote, he had his men go to the "old Carry" as a form of salute/honor to the Rebs as they passed by at Appomattox. What position in manual of arms is he referring
    to? Thanks

"Carry arms" is used in the manual of arms for muskets for going to shoulder arms (in the left hand) from Support arms.
The rest of the time the order is "shoulder arms".

"The carry" is the name for shoulder arms in both the manual of arms for sword carrying officers. And also for the cavalry when dismounted. (both saber and carbine)

When Upton made his post war drill book, unifying drill was one of the goals. And the standard way of carrying your arm was called the Carry and the order was "carry arms"
No matter if the man was infantry or cavalry and carrying a saber carbine or full length rifle.

Before late 1862 union units with smoothbores where suppose to use the manual of arms for muskets so I guess he would have known of it. And his men might also have known it... even if they had not practiced it. But Iam just guessing about this part.
