  • 48th OVI letter collection on e-bay

Folks, I really hate to see a collection broken up like this, esp by someone who has no idea what he has. There may be way more than just these 5 letters. the 48th OVI was a hard fighting, well traveled bunch who fought toe to toe with my ancestor's unit the 18th LA twice. At Shiloh, where the Buckeyes helped decimate the Pelicans and at Mansfield where the Pelicans helped capture almost the entire 48th OVI.

Anyway, I e-mailed the guy appealing to him to not break it up and consider posting it as a collection. You Ohio afficianados may want to take a look.

      Re: letter collection on e-bay

For what it is worth, one time I contacted a seller breaking up several CW soldier letters and told him outright that though I wouldn't be able to purchase the whole collection, I was interested in and would greatly appreciate a transcription for research purposes.

A SASE later and I had typed copies of several letters of some Wisconsiners trooping around Missouri and Kansas....

This makes me sick - reply from the seller of the 48th OVI collection:

HI, THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST IN THE LETTERS. WHILE I APPRECIATE YOUR OFFER TO PURCHASE THE ENTIRE LOT, I WOULD PREFER TO SELL THE LETTERS INDIVIDUALLY. I BELIEVE THERE ARE ABOUT 20 MORE I WILL BE LISTING. MOST OF THOSE ARE FROM 1863, SOME LATER.

These should be published not thrown to the winds - I asked to please allow a transcript to be completed before they are all gone. These may include letters from Shiloh, Vicksburg, prison (he was captured at Mansfield and send to Camp Ford) and valuable info on the Red River Campaign.

No answer from him on the transcript idea yet.

If it's greed that motivates him he needs to udnerstand that published in book form he would make lots more money.
