  • crown measurements of original dress hats

    Comrades,
I am searching for the dimensions of different crowns of different regulation dress hats aka Hardee Hats.
Anybody who has the possibliity to measure an original one is most welcome to let me know the hight, length and width of the crown.
I know that these differed from maker to maker.
    Thank you!

Re: crown measurements of original dress hats

    Hallo!

    Gruess dich!

General Orders No. 3, dated March 24, 1858 said:

Width of brim: 3 1/4 inches
Height of crown: 6 1/4 inches
    Oval of tip: 1/2 inches
    Taper of crown: 3/4 inches

Here are four sets of original measurements:

    Brim: 3", 3", 3", 3 1/8"

    Height: 5 3/4", 5 5/8", 5 3/4", 5 7/8"

    Crown: 5 3/4" x 6 1/4", 5 7/8" x 6 3/8", 5 5/8" x 6 1/2", 5 7/8" x 6 3/8"

One should note that the measurements reflect those found on hats of different SIZES.
Meaning, in succession, the first hat was a Size 3, the second a Size 4, the third a Size 5, and the fourth a Size 4.

One would need a few measurements from a number of same size hats to look for maker variations.

IMHO, the best that these four sets of measurements "do," is show that one Size 4 was
    3", 5 5/8", 5 7/8" x 6 3/8" versus a second Size 4 at 3 1/8", 5 7/8", 5 7/8" x 6 3/8".

        Hallo!

I do not visualize the 1/2" "oval of tip" one...

            Jan,

I've published several articles on the 1858 Uniform Hat, which includes surveys of all dimensions (they do vary) from a number of different originals. I posted it on the Research Articles section of the AC, but I think it may have gotten lost. E-mail me and I'll send you a copy scross@ci.oshkosh.wi.us
