It might not be a good idea to refer to Whitman and your ass in the same sentence. You know he prefered, shall we say, the "company" of men. :( I say we hire some toughs to go after both these fellas!

            Re: I hate this guy.

We are all aware that Walt Whitman, shall we say, rode pretty high in the saddle. However, if you haven't read his book Memoranda During the Civil War you owe it to yourself to give it a read. He does an excellent job of describing what it was like to be live in wartime Washington, DC. It's available at most of the National Park Service visitors centers.

              Re: I hate this guy.

Before the fora went down, Tom Smith had queried whether or not the "woo" guy, whom I hate, could have managed to squeeze himself into the company of John Surratt, or perhaps into the circle of conspirators. I doubted it, since his time would have been goodly chewed up by stalking area photographers.

              But...

              I was wrong.

At least we know his fate.

I knew it!! He was obviously Lewis Payne in disguise! :p On a more factual note I suspect he was a member of the Christian Commission since he appears in at least there in at least three of the photos (I found two others myself in Millers Photographic History of the Civil War.

Alas, I cannot. I met with James H. Billington,The Librarian of Congress, at a remote country crossroads at midnight last Thursday, where I sold him my soul for complete access to the photographic archives.

I'm bound to them for eternity.
