  • "CSA: Confederate States of America" film

    Greetings,

According to this report from the Sundance Film Festival, IFC Films has purchased the rights to "CSA: Confederate States of America" (directed by Professor Kevin Wilmott of the University of Kansas Theater and Film Department), which is purportedly an "alternative history documentary" showing what would have happened had the South won its war of independence:

At least seven films have been bought for distribution--five features and two documentaries--and several others are close to deals as Sundance Film Festival reaches half-way point; features being shown seem not to have sparked much interest among audiences; photos (M)

Alas, this project sounds like something that could be either very interesting...or a complete hatchet job. Here are some additional details about the film I found:

Any other details about this film would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Mark Jaeger

I always love how the public at large thinks the Civil War was fought and won/lost at Gettysburg. I would love to see a book/story/movie from the standpoint the North lost the Civil War because Lil Mac won the election of 1864.

Harry Turtledove has an alternate history, which carries through to the end of WW1, in which the South won the war at Antietam. I've read it, and it's not too bad, although I doubt a disgraced Lincoln would have become the North's formost advocate of socialism. :)

Spike Lee was impressed enough by this film to lend his name to its promotion. I look forward to seeing it somewhere down the road, when and if it becomes available on DVD. Given Lee's endorsement, I have my suspicions that anyone thinking this film will give the history of the CSA (be it real or imagined) an even-handed treatment is in for a surprise.

I checked out the website for the movie and I must say that the whole thing seems to be a big joke and I don't mean that in a good way. This is some crazy extremist idea as to what the CSA would be like now if the South had won. I read there is a part where they spoof Home Shopping Network and are selling slaves on TV! Slavery would have died by the turn of the century decades before television. Also, participation with the rest of the world would have caused a black movement in the the CSA similar to what occurred in the USA.

It appears the intent of this "film" is to ridicule a particular section of the country and a particular group within that section......

                .............(Hate Crime?...Hate Speech?)

If someone made a film attacking Blacks, Jews, Yankees, or some other group wouldn't there be a howl be raised about that...???????????

I want to see this, it couldnt be any worse than the Civil War vampire movie or Gods and Generals.

I have read a few reviews and have seen the website. The film is just another installment in the ongoing defamation of the South and everything Southern.

That is the intent of it.

Of the US presidents since I was born 3 out of 5 were from the south. Several "Top End" companies from my area have moved to the South (NC GA and TX) changing the economy of my region. The south has been seeing a reverse migration that it has not seen since the Civil War. I dont see how the south is being abused.

I wasn't refering to the economy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, or any other modern day element but to the treatment of the South's history- The misrepresentations, half-truths, and outright lies of Hollywood, the News Media(Editorials; Flag issue ad nauseum), and the PC versions of history taught on the college campus.
