  • Quartermaster reports of the 157th Bavarian Infantry

I thought this might be interesting to see what was actually issued to a German company. This was from a report from April 1917.

    (14) 9mm dachshunds with slings and bayonets
    (23) gas mask bags (pastries to fill the bag to be drawn at field kitchens)
    (11) shoes
    (46) picklehaubes, (8 of them missing pickles and were rejected)
    (21) 'Gott Mit Sie' belt buckles (these proved to be very unpopular with the men)
    (68) potato mashers (mistakenly sent to the front as grenades)
    (100) undershirts with 'der Kaiser ist meine freunden' printed on them

In translating some more of the list it appears that each soldier was issued a new bread bag and each came with a Kaiser roll.
