They use several applications of blue latex spray paint on Jennifer Lawrence as 'Mystique.. They apply the scales and detail.
For an authentic look, it is best to allow an hour or two between layers to prevent cracking or wrinkling.
The latex, "breathes."

Or go the natural route. Woad. The traditional recipe is to mix it with sheep urine. If you want a shorter lasting blue, mixing it with vodka is the standard alternative, however, sheep urine apparently gives better visions...Michael Thomas
