It will end when there's a Casino near the Gettysburg Battlefield. And since the NPS's budget is based on attendance, and every bus with 72 folks on it, which rides through the park counts twords raising that budget number, you'll never ever hear a peep out of them or the Gettysburg Foundation(folks who run the "visitors" center). At this point in time, Adams County Pa has one of the most depressed economies in the state. Let's be serious. Although there are many, many folks who care about the history and the honored dead; those folks in and around Gettysburg have been doing everything then can since July 5, 1863 to make money from the Battlefield. Up to and including charging wounded men for food, water and wagon rides to hospital. You think in this day and age any of that's changed? Or, do you actually the money grabbing is going to go away? Been down Stienwher Avenue, Baltimore Street, York Street or The Chambersburg Pike in Gettysburg lately? You think any of those trinket vendors are going to push away increased traffic? Keep dreamin'.

I see only one good side and one only... MAYBE there will be increased interest in the war enough to raise money for battlefields and other preservation. MAYBE.

Still pretty sick to me, but it's been going on for years just after the war up to present.

And obviously, the elected officials in our PA House and Senate, do what they usually do...whatever puts money in their re-election campaign fund.

Keep your eyes on the now defunct "Boyd's Bears" property. Meets the distance requirements.

After a fight of a dozen years, the proposed American Revolution Center was forced by "preservationists" to locate twenty five miles away from Valley Forge, to downtown Philadelphia, because it's mere presence was supposed to spoil the scenic views.
A multi-story casino https://www.vfcasino.com/ contiguous to the park apparently is no problem for the people of Pennsylvania.
Money rules- it can still happen at Gettysburg.

            Gah!!

I'm getting sick and tired of a possible casino in Gettysburg. While not ideal, the majority of the core battlefield has been protected, something that CAN NOT be said for most Civil War battlefields. I'm hoping (and it will ultimately not come to pass) that the Civil War Trust invests its limited resources into what it does best, the purchase and protection of actual battlefield and not fight a casino.

Two months ago I was standing on the field where Von Steuben, red faced, fat, screaming non stop in- your- face profanity in a thick German accent from dawn til dark, turned a rag tag bunch of militia into an army in the winter of 1777-78. That army went on to beat the British Redcoats, best in the world.
The suffering of those patriots made the place sacred, IMHO.
I could see the casino from there, it's hard to miss. Maybe I'm a romantic, but it just don't seem right.
