    This letter was written to show support for the change in the PSD in Spotsylvania County, which will be voted on tomorrow. See release from CSCB below.

    Spotsylvania should remove Mullins tract from district

    August 8, 2004 1:10 am

    The upcoming Spotsylvania County Board of supervisors vote on removing the Mullins tract from the Primary Settlement District in Spotsylvania will do several things:

    1) Help the National Park Service continue to interpret the battle of Chancellorsville;

    2) Help to restrict changes to the historic landscape;

    3) Help to stop the extension of traffic problems that exist along other portions of State Route 3 through the park; and

    4) Help to increase tourism in the region.

    I hope the board sees fit to make the change to the PSD on Tuesday.

    In less than a month, friends of Chancellorsville Battlefield will have another opportunity to strike a blow for preservation of the May 1, 1863 battlefield. On August 10, the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors will vote on whether to remove the farm property from the county's primary settlement district.

    The Mullins Farm was placed in the county's Primary Settlement District as a result of a sweetheart deal made by a lame duck session of the board of supervisors in December 1999. The hearing on August 10 is an attempt by the current board to right this egregious wrong. According to Spotsylvania County Supervisor Hap Connors, "This new Board is following that mandate of the people by calling this meeting. It is something that's long overdue."

    For the preservation community, the consequences of the this meeting could be decisive. If the Mullins Farm is successfully removed from the primary settlement district, it will eliminate one of the remaining hurdles to protection of this hallowed battleground.

    The 6:30 p.m. hearing will held at the R. E. Holbert Memorial Building, 9104 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania -- a location quite familiar to Chancellorsville activists. For a map and directions to the hearing, visit:
