  • VDE Donates to Preservation

The Victorian Dance Ensemble is pleased to announce that it recently awarded $4,000 in preservation and education grants to seven organizations. One thousand dollars was given to the Civil War Preservation Trust, of Washington, D.C., and five hundred dollars each to the Dr. Patri J. Pugliese Historical Dance Scholarship Fund of Melrose, Mass., Slifer House in Lewisburg, Pa.., USS Constellation in Baltimore, Md., Eckley Miners Village Associates in Weatherly, Pa., Historic Yellow Springs in Chester Springs, Pa., and Hampton National Historic Site in Towson, Md.

“Each year, our members select organizations and causes to help support preservation and education. We are very pleased to make these donations to these worthy organizations to help them preserve our history,” said Annette Keener-Farley, president of the Ensemble.

With this year’s donations, the total has now reached over $19,000 since the group began awarding grants in 2000. Past recipients have included the Museum of the Confederacy, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum, Beauvoir – Jefferson Davis’ Home, the Maryland Historical Society, the Antietam National Battlefield, the Gen. Meade Society Scholarship Fund, Wilderness Ellwood House Restoration, and the Pennsylvania Capitol Preservation Committee's Flag Project.

The Victorian Dance Ensemble, founded in 1995, has over fifty members from five states and presents about thirty programs each year. It has presented dance demonstrations for the Smithsonian Institution, National Park Service, National Civil War Museum, Maryland Historical Society, Harrisburg’s Whitaker Performing Arts Center, Virginia’s Pamplin Park, North Carolina's Museum of the Cape Fear, and for numerous other historical organizations and sites.

The group has also presented special educational programs for the CWPT Teacher Institute, the Capital Area Intermediate Unit’s Teaching American History Project, the Society for Women and the Civil War and several schools and colleges.

The Ensemble also provides dance instruction and floor managers for various Civil War and Victorian balls and dances each year, including three of the premiere vintage balls in the nation, the Sons of Union Veterans’ Remembrance Day Ball in Gettysburg, the Union League’s Abraham Lincoln Ball in Philadelphia and the Civil War Preservation Ball in the Rotunda of the Pennsylvania Capitol in Harrisburg. The 2006 Preservation Ball raised sufficient funds to retore the vandalized 114th Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg.
