    Vehicle plows into cemetery wall
    January 28, 2008 12:15 am
A Fredericksburg man was charged with drunken driving after crashing into the brick wall of the city's Confederate Cemetery early yesterday, police say.

Casey Theodore Kearns, 31, lost control of a 2006 Toyota 4Runner about 1 a.m. after turning left onto Washington Avenue from Amelia Street, said Fredericksburg police Lt. Greg Lettner.

The SUV knocked down about an 8-foot stretch of the brick wall about halfway between Amelia and William streets. Lettner said there was about $10,000 damage to the wall and $7,000 damage to the vehicle.

Kearns is charged with DUI, hit and run, and refusing to take a Breathalyzer test, Lettner said. Police arrested him near his home in the 1100 block of Winchester Street. The SUV had heavy front-end damage. Kearns got a $2,500 bond.

Lettner said the brick wall around the historic cemetery has been hit nearly 10 times during the 24 years he's been with the Fredericksburg Police Department.

      Protect our precious cemetery wall!

      Protect our precious cemetery wall!
Once again, the battered cemetery wall on Washington Avenue has been damaged by carelessness.

How many more times will the structure of this wall (made from the bricks of homes and businesses in Fredericksburg) be able to withstand these careless actions? Are the history of our town and the importance of this landmark not worth saving?

Is it too much to place a flashing red light in both directions at the intersection of Amelia Street and Washington Avenue to make all vehicles stop? Or is it unreasonable to place a speed bump on Amelia to slow traffic?

How about placing a guardrail to absorb the initial impact of the next out-of-control car headed for the cemetery wall?

If the history of this landmark is not worth consideration, will it take the life of a citizen who innocently walks the sidewalk and is crushed between an out-of-control car and the wall? What will it take to get something done?

        Cemetery wall breached again
        February 19, 2008 12:15 am

        BY EMILY BATTLE

City officials are hoping that new, higher curbs could help keep motorists from crashing into the wall around the City Cemetery on Washington Avenue.

That wall can't seem to catch a break.

In the past year, it has been damaged three times by cars.

Most recently, a drunken driver smashed into the wall in the early hours of Jan. 27, leaving a hole that's still there.

The writer of a letter to The Free Lance-Star suggested the city place a guard rail in front of the wall to protect it from errant motorists in the future.

Public works officials considered that, along with the possibility of lining the road with posts that could block cars, or even a secondary brick wall in the city right of way.

According to a memo from Assistant Public Works Director Dave King to the City Council, those options were rejected because they would ruin the view of the wall, they're expensive and they don't meet the Virginia Department of Transportation's standards for road barriers.

But King said public works officials did notice that the curb next to the cemetery wall is only 2 or 3 inches high.

The standard height for new curbs on city streets is 6 inches.

King is proposing to replace the old curb with A 9-inch curb to make it harder for cars to run up onto the sidewalk and barrel into the wall.

That would also include resurfacing at least part of this block of Washington Avenue.

Depending on whether the city decides to re-curb and re-surface only the cemetery side, or both sides of Washington Avenue, that could cost between $40,000 and $55,000.

City officials aren't talking about tackling this project on its own.

It would be thrown into the pot with all of the other streets that need improvement and compete with those projects for funding in the city's asphalt contract for the next fiscal year.

According to some defense lawyers, the above news reports are a pack of lies.

Truth be told, it was the Fredericksburg cemetery wall that brutally, and without warning, crashed into the cars as their drivers, solid citizens all, were merely minding their own business.

          Very truly yours, &c.,
