  • Modern political debates and preservation vs. progress collide

Moderator note: Okay, let me say I think this is important to be here because this will/can affect many historic sites particularly in the areas already terribly threatened. This thread is NOT to be turned into a "I love Mr. Huckabee" or "I hate Mr. Huckabee." Posts that dilvulged too much either direction may be subject to removal by the Authentic-Camapaigner's moderating staff.

All that being said here's a link to the newspaper article regarding Huckabee's thoughts about Interstate 95: http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2...1292008/351513

    Comrade,

To be honest, I'd rather see the money taken away from any highway widening project and instead put it into rebuilding passenger rail or bus lines. Either would be both better for the country and better for preservation.

Re: Modern political debates and preservation vs. progress collide

In light of Mr. Huckabee's future plans if he get into the Presidency, I feel in nesscary to point out that the State of Virginia has long been developing plans to widen the I-81 cooridor (regardless of who's in the white house). This currently still born project ( http://virginiadot.org/projects/cons...1-overview.asp )( http://www.roadstothefuture.com/I81_Widening_VA.html ) would Decimate the New Market Battlefield, which for anyone who dosen't know is already split by I-81. Prehaps the past is giving way to progress, mostly driven by those who do not or will not study the history of this great country. There are all sorts of enviromental, economic, and a plethora of other studies; I have not found any cultural and historical impact studies. Just seems that who we were is not as important as wetland areas or how many starbucks they can queeze into a strip-mall. (Just a pet peeve of mine.)

(also Passenger rail travel could be made more viable is returned to the private sector, I believe that only Norfolk Southern would not be bound by the AMTRAK legislation as they disolved thier passenger service in lieu of that solution.)

Good news on this front FHWA killed the I-81 project with Flour Daniel with the Truck toll lanes widening the entire length of I-81. VDOT is now pursuing truck lanes in several parts where their is a severe vertical gradient.
