HEBBERT & CO PALL MALL, LONDON
Another Company that provided the Confederacy with uniforms and equipment, although it is largely overshadowed by Tait, Ross, S Isaac Campbell etc.( The company name is often mispelt as Herbert or Helbert)
Hebbert & Co provided 5,500 " military jackets" and "Trowsers" again, to Maj JF Minter in Nov 1864, as part of an order for some 15,000 for the TMD - Tait & Co provided the other 10,000- its probable the company supplied lots more uniforms(including CS Naval uniforms) to the Confederacy, plus equipage.

Founded in 1815 it was known as Hebbert & Hume in Leicester Sq London
And at Pall Mall from 1826.
From 1830 the company was known as Charles Hebbert, and then Charles Hebbert & Co
The firm became Hebbert & Co in 1852
In 1843 they were described as " Army Clothiers" and by 1863 " Army clothiers, cap, & Accoutrement maker"
Buttons with the "HEBBERT & CO/ LONDON backmarks, are still often found and sold in the States, some of them CS Navy buttons ( A Hebbert & Co CS Naval button was recently for sale on the Picket Post website)
Yet another wonderful piece of history.

      Dave,

Great information on Hebbert & Co. Ironically, I had saved these images just the other day. I believe the original was dug somewhere in the TMD if I'm not mistaken.

        Neill,
This gets better and better,a Hebbert CS naval button turning up in the TMD.
Other Hebbert buttons that have turned up include lined "roman" I buttons - these were exactly the same as the Tait buttons and were the small 19mm variety
Artillery buttons, again "roman" A 19mm, and the "CSN" naval buttons.
The company also provided 3,000 Bayonet scabbards to Minter in November 1864, as part of another delivery to the TMD.
