  • How early?

    Neill or Allen -
I wonder if either one of you would be able to share with us how early the McRae papers and correspondence date. Obviously we have one invoice already posted here from August of 61, Just something I've been pondering.

    Re: How early?

    Paul,

If my memory serves me correct, there are documents dated as early as July, 1861. These particular documents are princing quotes from I&C to Huse for "Soldier Pattern Kits". Basically, this is a complete set of gear to field a soldier ie. uniform, shirts, drawers, shoes, accoutrements, etc. Even down to "union" hose, comb and boot brush with blacking. Looks like Huse was looking to make the most of his government's money. Pretty amazing that while First Manassas was taking place, old Caleb was already working deals!

    Hope this helps!
