Who are we at The Authentic Citizen—who do we represent?

We portray everyday common people of the mid-19th century. The ones with log or clapboard homes if they are fortunate, and the ones who sleep under a wagon on their way west. The ones who entertain at home with whatever music can be made. The ones who farm their land with their own hands, sharecrop for a rich man, or are enslaved. Our grandparents may have come as indentured servants, we may be fresh off the boat ourselves, or our people may have been brought here against their will. We may have ‘always’ been here, but see our land shrink with every treaty. We look to the history of a given place before we determine who we will portray.

You’ve seen some quiet changes here lately, as we work to lay a stronger research foundation that translates easily to current ways of accessing such. Trish Watrous Hasenmueller has agreed to join the Facebook group moderating staff. We are actively looking for contributors with solid research.

And today, we join The Authentic Campaigner as an affiliated Facebook Group. I’ll become a part of the staff for The Authentic Campaigner Forum, which gives us the facility to store research in a more permanent and accessible manner than Facebook provides.

We hope you’ll come along and tell us what is important to you as you portray an Authentic Citizen of the mid-19th century. (Image Credit, Wendell Decker, Selma Alabama 2015)

Yassir, I used to be Mrs. Lawson. I still run period dyepots, knit stuff, and cause trouble.

    Re: The Authentic Citizen

We tend to forget that soldiers during the war were civilians a lot longer than they were soldiers.
