My fiancee is looking at buying a pair of shoes. Not sure where to look exactly and of course she wants some options. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not too long ago on Szabo's (CWreenactors.com) forum we had this same discussion and almost all agreed that Robert Serio (Missouri Boot & Shoe), Robert Land, and Tom Mattimore were the best options for shoes/boots in the hobby. They will all do custom work and Serio and Land offer basic styles as well. Land offers the most varied styles of shoes, besides the basic black leather shoe. Fugawee's Rose has a general look of "ok" but if you're able to go ahead and buy a good shoe from the other aforementioned vendors then it would be better once again than buy for the now and then replace 6 months later.

I would like to add an inquiry about what non-leather shoes were common and could be reproduced. I have seen patterns for what I think is embroidery for shoes/slippers but I don’t know the other materials in their construction. Where should I start for looking into these? If these are not appropriate, please excuse the question.

I have always made my own shoes from the pattern book Every Lady Her Own Shoemaker purchased from Amazon Drygoods. I found that the silk gaitors are easy to make and to fit. This style of shoes can be made enitirely by hand and can be made during an event. However, although I make most of mine by hand, I've become a bit of a cheater in the fact that I prefer to sew the leather sole on my sewing machine. Consequently, unless you have strong hands to stitch through the sole or a hand crank machine, you'll want to finish the last part at home. Also, a good thing to add to the inside is one of those cushioned insoles as that helps when walking over rough surfaces.
Another option is to make yourself a pair of needlepoint mules if your impression is pretty much a stationary one.
