  • Newbie civil war lower or middle class civilian needing help

    Hello,

I am very new at Civil War living history and am needing lots of info / pointers. I live in Frederick, MD, so I am able to attend several different battlefields, encampments, etc. One pointer that I received, which made sense, was to try and find someone from that era who lived in Frederick or one of the surroundings towns who worked for the railroad and try and portray them.

I already know several of my faults. I tried to find / do / buy everything at once. Then I started finding out about Frocks, and evening wear, and ( expectedly ) that different social classes wore different items or maybe the "same" item, but of a different fabric or cut. These items, along with different ettiquette had my head swimming.

I was not certain what social class a railroader would fit under. I also was confused as to whether a railroader would wear brogans, boots, bootees, etc. I had also fallen prey to some sutlers who probably meant well, but gave me wrong advice and purchased period incorrect vests and other items for myself and different items for my wife.

I tried to look at the pics of Matthew Brady, but those are city folk and I would also presume a higher social class than I am representing. I understand that photography was not cheap back then, and so, there are (seemingly) fewer photographs of country or small town middle or lower social class individuals than others.

I have since stopped purchasing and am asking even more questions ( sometimes getting more confused ) and also focusing on my occupation, time of day I will be needing period clothes for, my social class, and my living location.

One of my concerns was that, if I went to an encampment or re-enactment wearing my railroad clothes, and the railroad did not even come close to that area, how could I explain my presence there, other than possibly fleeing from invading forces, or joining ranks with a militia or being a government spy.

I read the posts back in 2004 about some of the providers for foot wear, and pegged soles versus sewen. I do not care to ressurect some of the somewhat heated discussions that were posted. If there are any old posts that would answer my questions, please refer me to that post number. If there is any other input, suggestions, or advice, please feel free to directly e-mail me.

    Thank you in advance,

Mark, I've moved your question from the Sinks, over to the Citizen's Discussion area, where it should fit a bit better. :)

What roles do you anticipate filling at upcoming events? The majority of history-heavy citizen roles are filled on a per-event basis, so your roles/wardrobe in one may be completely differen than the roles/wardrobe for another, though with working class roles, there is a lot of overlap in the clothing.

What items do you currently own? Can you link over to any images of yourself in the clothes, to give an idea of fit and proportion?

Knowing who you'll be playing in the coming year or so is perhaps the largest factor in assembling your working-man's wardrobe over the winter.
    Regards,
    Elizabeth Clark

First, ditto to what Liz said.

Also depends on what railroad job. Building bridges? Escorting the ladies to the ladies car? In general, though, I think aiming for a laborer's or mechanic's class would work well, unless you'd be uniformed by the railroad.

For on-the-job photographs of laborers, this is an excellent site: http://images.library.pitt.edu/cgi-b...;c=lysh;g=imls

For specific images of railroad workers, the Library of Congress at http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/pphome.html probably has some. Ran across this with a quick search: http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/ppmsca.10412 "Two railroad construction workers hammer track as third construction worker watches" circa 1862-63.

As you noted, even a laborer might dress differently going to church on Sunday, going out visiting friends, or doing the grubbiest part of his work. And similarly, a wealthy person would still have "old clothes" for situations that required them. So what you wear may depend as much on what you're actually doing at events than who you're portraying.

One of my concerns was that, if I went to an encampment or re-enactment wearing my railroad clothes, and the railroad did not even come close to that area, how could I explain my presence there, other than possibly fleeing from invading forces, or joining ranks with a militia or being a government spy.
Unless you're portraying a uniformed railroad worker, the same generic laborer clothes could fit many impressions, and for civilians at c/p/h events, there's usually already a premise for why the civilians are there, designed by the organizers as part of the whole event structure. So I'd think that the clothes wouldn't lock you into one impression so much as the knowledge, but knowledge is cheaper to expand on!

WOW! Thank you all so much! There are even more things to consider, which will help me make a more correct clothing purchase.

As for what I would be doing with the RR? Engineer or fireman, although I have also worked in a track gang before so a common laborer would work as well. They are non railroad issued uniform jobs. Just work clothes. Engineers can be found in a "dress" (presumably sack) coat while they were working.

Please continue to keep the helpful hints and advice coming.

Unfortunately, that link requires membership to see where it goes, or at least that's the message I got.
