  • 2nd Virginia at 1st Manassas

    Hello all!
I'm looking for some information on the uniforms of the 2nd Virginia at 1st Manasas. I've tried searching on here but haven't found anything on the forums. Does anyone have information on this? Or any sources I could be directed to? I'm guessing that there were several types of uniforms from the various companies, but just haven't found any articles on this. Thanks to any info provided!

The 2nd VA had a variety of uniforms, which company are you portraying? Check out the Virginia Regimental Series for the 2nd Va Infantry, it should have something. I know the company from Shepherdstown wore uniforms similar to the 7th NY, and Co. D from Martinsburg wore a Grey Coatee with Red trim. I'll see if I can rustle up some pics.

Here's a later image of the 7th NY uniform similar to the one worn by the Shepherdstown Company They did not wear a large shako but a smaller French style shako, hopefully someone has a better image.

Excellent pics! I do not know which company yet, I am trying to get a feel for what varieties were worn by the Regiment.

You can buy the book on Amazon. My wife's GGG uncle (Adam Cruzan Link) was in Company H, 2nd Virginia. We have his photo taken in 1861 in uniform. The only problem is the photo only shows him from chest up. He is wearing a grey jacket with black collar and black eppoletts and a dark grey or blue kepi. I'll try to dig it out tomorrow and post it for you.

Good luck purchasing the book at a reasonable price!

Bill is right about the price! I've found it on amazon as low as $60.00 a few times. There were only a thousand or so of each regimental history printed. They are becoming rare and given the fact that the 2nd Virginia was in the stonewall brigade everyone wants one. If you hunt around you will be able to find it for $50-$60 bucks probably. Imagine what that book will be worth in 25 years!

There is currently a copy on amazon.com for $70.81 and a copy on ebay for $74.80. There are several copies on abebooks.com with much higher prices.

If you are looking for a copy of the 2nd Virginia Infantry in the VA Regimental Series, you might want to try contacting a few of the Shenandoah museums. They had some of the Stonewall brigade books in the gift shop of the Lexington Stonewall Jackson House when I was there in October.

                            Hello 4VADrummer,

I'm researching the uniforms worn by the Stonewall Brigade at First Manassas. I would be very interested in the photograph. Can you please post it or send it in a private message to me? I would be very thankful.

                            Best wishes, Johan Heitzer.
