    In going through a multitude of period sources regarding picket duty, I came across this document published by the U.S. War Department in 1863 : Instructions for Officers and Non-commissioned Officers on Outpost and Patrol Duty And Troops in Campaign.

    This is a source cited by Butterfield and by Kautz in his NCO and Officer manuals as General Orders No. 69, Headquarters, Army of the Potomac, February 25th, 1862. There's some good stuff in here, and I have incorporated some chunks of it into the booklet I'm compiling for Picket Post. Thought I'd share a link here as there aren't reprints of it available like there are of Mahan, Butterfield, Kautz and others.
