Re: Been at this too long...?

.... when your redneck belt buckle says Us and holds a Bayonet

.... when your family forces you to try on modern shoes

.... and when your mom ask's you to wiggle your toes you reply with" what toes , they fell off at Hurricane ridge"

.... you start refering to real civil war battles as back in the day.

....your brogans last for less than 4 years

.... you've ever broken more than one tooth on hardtack

.... you carry a blanket roll to work instead of a brefecase

When the power fails in the Northeast, and you don't even wonder for a moment where the flashlight is -- you know exactly where the candles, matches and lanterns are.

When you go food shopping and sometimes have to remind yourself that it's ok to buy non-period food to cook and eat at home.

When you cross "McClellan," "Burnside," and "Sedgewick" avenues, in the same neighborhood and your companion isn't at all surprised to hear you explain who they were. And it seems like poetic justice that McClellan Avenue is today smack in the middle of one of the worst parts of the Bronx.

When you become convinced that education is definately being "dumbed down" when you meet a lifelong resident of Lawrence, Kansas, a recent graduate of the University of Kansas who is completely ignorant of the meaning of the terms "Jayhawker," (except with reference to a sports team) "Beecher's Bibles," "Ossawattamee Brown", "Massachusetts Emigrant Aid Society."

When the radiator heat in your building is on the blink and you dig out the Family Heirloom Weavers doubleweave and two more wool blankets, and start wondering when it would be a good idea to simply build a fire in the alley to warm up.

You know you've been at this too long when you visit the local museum and catch yourself fighting the urge to correct everything the local farb guide is telling you about clothing, etc.

Re: Been at this too long...?

You've been at this too long when:

You fill an entire closet with different uniforms and equipment...

Then you dedicate an entire room of the house to equipment, original items, pictures, etc...

Then one room isn't enough and it spills into a second room...

Then you decide to research and produce an item you like and the entire attic becomes filled with your wares...

Ladies, you will know what I'm talking about here: you know you've been at this too long (or been too long without an event) when you see a good looking man walk across a parking lot and the first thing that pops into your head is "I wonder what he would look like in uniform".

Ditto many of the other posts about clothing, closet creep, bad museum displays, etc. Here's my contribution:

Your freezer and cupboard are crammed with staple period foodstuffs for future events. You throw away the Frosted Mini Wheats to make room for more hardtack.

Caught myself talking to my 2 year old son about the colors of stars on his crib...

"Andy, red is for first division 12th Corps and blue is for third division...."

he laughed...probably knows his daddy is unwell :D

Re: Been at this too long...?

You know you've been at this too long when you buy a t-shirt with a period drawing of a marching soldier and the legend, "Civil War Reenactor / Smoke - Fire - Burns / Bad Coffee - Worse Food / Wet Straw - Wet Canvas - Wet Clothes / Heat - Humidity - Hard Ground / Rain - Mud - Cold / Battalions of Bugs / Life Just Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!" and you wear it to work just so people will ask you about it. What was I thinking? :o :)
