  • Great War: "KILTS KILTS KILTS!!!"

The AmCiv hobby didn't have enough of them, so Great War allows us to FINALLY wear kilts into battle. So many AmCiv farbonzos do, but now it is finally period-appropriate to indulge in my battle skirt-wearing fantasy.

But, being new to Great War, do your bollocks get cold in a trench wearing a kilt? I assume that they would in some way. I mean, the fellers are just waving in the wind like that. That is bound to have major shrinkage too.

Also, how about the evils of 'trench kahones'??? I carry crotch powder in AmCiv events now, but I guess I'll have to make an investment in MORE CROTCH POWDER for Great War.

Going to the Sinks, er... latrine, is probably easier wearing a kilt. No messy suspenders or pants to accidentally poo on.

Oh, so those mods on here see there is some "research value" to this thread, here are a few links for your reading pleasure:

Alfred Anderson, Scotland's last link to the Great War and the country's oldest man, has died at the age of 109. The Black Watch veteran was one of the first...

What are your Great War experiences with kilts???

Us jocks in the 2/Gordons generally freeze our bollocks off. You can always tell an old highlander by the cuts on the back on his legs. When the kilt gets wet then freezes, the edges of t are like razor blades.

Johnny, you bring up some interesting points. I've been looking for a great kilt pattern for a while now and they just don't seem too available. I've hoped to dabble in the GW hobby a little, but afraid I couldn't find the right group. I will have to look into it some more.

Not correct patterns for the Gordon Highlanders of Canada, at least. I thought AmCiv was expensive, but a custom kilt is PRICEY. Who makes the best one for the money???

I think the upside of all this is that bagpipes are welcomed with open arms now.

Re: Great War: "KILTS KILTS KILTS!!!"

The most appropriate style of kilt to get (depending on what regiment you portray) is simply an EX-Mod kilt. It is almost impossible to accurately reproduce a 20th century kilt without being a professional kilt maker.

Finally an excuse to wear my kilt outside of my pipe band. Can't wait

I wonder what a documented kilt would cost? Authentic baby!

Average price for an ex-mod is around $300. If you find a war dated one it could go up to $600-700

                      Ken,

What Price Glory makes a great WWI, MOD Kilt. Some of us have been fortunate enough to pick one up off of e-bay for as little as a $100.00. Minus the cost of an SMLE, doing British WWI runs just less than 1K for a full impression. Very comparable to most quality ACW impressions (minus the cost of the weapon). You would be surprised (Perhaps) by whom all are getting involved with WWI reenacting, and especially the criminals (and more than a few Brothers) who have pitched in with the 2d Gordons.
