  • March 2011 Image: Group of Quartermaster dept. "at leisure"

    Hello!

This is our second image featuring an image from the Library of Congress. It shows a detail of a larger image of some gents with the 1st Corps, 9th Div QM dept "taking it easy".

Here you can see some soldiers in issue hats and blouses, as well as gents in private purchase garments. It is tough to tell if the latter are soldiers or civilians. What are your thoughts?

Also, a number of personal items can bee seen, including tobacco pipes, bottles, and other items.

Feel free to find this pic on the LoC site and post some other details, if you'd like.

    Enjoy!

    I Corps 9th Division...or IX Corps 1st Division?

Oops! Transcription error on my part. I cycled through a lot of images looking for candidates.

          Dyslexics of the world, untie!

Nice image regardless of the number of divisions.

            Thanks for the link, Silas.

I assume those are round bales of hay they are sitting on, bound up with saplings and boards. Those had to be godawful heavy to stack, unless they are not nearly as compressed and dense as modern bales.
As a "gentleman farmer" I find that detail interesting.

I love the long sack coats! Just finished making a Civilian Sack Coat something like this out of gray cashmere. My have to try one more this style in dark blue wool! Thanks for posting!

Take a long, close look at the items the seated man at center is holding. It looks like a greenback sticking out of one side, some kind of blank form on the other, and a wallet with the Ninth Corps fouled anchor/cannon and his name drawn on the front.

I always think it's interesting to see what people are holding in period images. Be it a bottle, weapon, money, etc. Great picture!
