Sounds good. The June Gazette ran the event report on the spring fling out at Ft Sanders, (thanks again to Coon Dawg for the pics). That is a very good site.

Re: Battle at Fort Sanders-Knoxville Tenn

      Gentlemen,
We are, hopefully, following forum guidelines on this adjunct.

I have been reluctant to make a post, due to the past discussion on adjuncts.

      So please bear with me.

The command of the company will fall upon Sean Cooper. He will portray Capt. Henry C. Nash- He was elected Captain of the company on July 20, 1862. The captain did, however, perish at Knoxville during the assault on Fort Sanders on November 29, 1863. Sean will assume the first person role of Captain Nash for the event.

Second in command will fall upon my shoulders. I will portray 1st Lt. Charles B. Sims. He was elected 1st Lieutenant July 20,1862. This was the same day Henry Nash was promoted to Capt. Both men were formerly 2nd Lts together. I am unsure at this point what factor determined rank, but I will find out.

All men interested in the company at Fort Sanders should review the original muster and select a man to honor. This weekend will be to honor those from Co A, of the 16th Georgia.

If you have any questions, please contact Sean Cooper or me.

Command structure may change with the amount of registered men. We would hope to field 30 rifles.

Re: Battle at Fort Sanders-Knoxville Tenn

        Greg,

Sounds like you boys with the New Knoxville Mess are square with the recently announced 'Adjunct' standards. Solid history and research, standards for the scenario and known campaigners leading the adventure.

I wish you all the best of luck, unfortunately us Carolina lowlanders will be occupied with supporting a pair of local events that weekend to keep our good standing with the powers that be where the Ashley and Cooper join to form the Atlantic Ocean.

        Good Luck Brother...
        Your Obedient Servant,

        Peter M. Berezuk

          Peter,
I hope to join you fellers in the low country for an event in the near future. In the mean time, I will take care of East Tenn.
Hopefully, we can do a better job with an image of Fort Sanders this year.
Too bad that thread was closed.
          See you soon,

Re: Battle at Fort Sanders-Knoxville Tenn

Here are the uniform standards for the event. They can also be found at www.seigeofknoxville.com

            16TH REGIMENT
            GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
            COMPANY A

            "MADISON COUNTY GREYS"

            Uniform guidelines

According to records, it is indicated that Longstreet's ANV was newly equipted in September of 1863. This was prior to their arrival at Chattanooga, before the battle at Chickamauga. Reports say that Bragg's men initially thought that Longstreet's men were federal soldiers due to the short blue-gray jackets (RD type II or III) and the light blue trousers. These reports are documented a few times. It is not to say that the men did not have western depot gear, as they could have picked up equipment as they left Chattanooga for Knoxville. Re: Battle at Fort Sanders-Knoxville Tenn

Here are some of the things that are planned for the event.

We will camp Friday night around the barn where registration was for Race to Knoxville. There will be a short march on Saturday morning as well as some skirmishing to recreat some of the advance on Knoxville.

During the day Saturday we will set up an interperative area where we will issue rations, put out a guard mount that will run throughout the weekend. We will be digging rifle pits, doing company and skirmish drill, as well as other fatigue duties.

Saturday night we will sleep on our arms in preperation for the dawn attack on Fort Sanders that the men of 1863 new they were to make that morning.

Sunday will be another day in the interperative area. We will still have a guard mount running and we will improve our position throughout the day.

There are a couple of battles that we will also participate in. We have been asked to participate in a skirmish that will recreate the wounding of Union Brigadier General William P. Sanders.

              See everyone in October.

Re: Battle at Fort Sanders-Knoxville Tenn

                Gents,

Hope this message finds you well. Greg, Steven, and I just got back from the event site for a drive through. We are pleased to announce that we have added another element to the event for this year.
We will camp off site on Friday night. You will be shuttled from the parking area (the old registration barn from Race) to a camping spot right on the Holsten river. We will then have around a 7 mile preservation march to the event site on Saturday morning. We will then be setting up our interpretive area. The march route is not to strenuous, but will be a good last minute warm up for those going to Bummers.
We are asking that each participant donate at least $1 per mile. For those of you who are not good at math, that's $7. We will make an official announcement in a couple of weeks with who the donation will be made to.
Hope you can make it. Check out our website www.seigeofknoxville.com.

Re: Battle at Fort Sanders-Knoxville Tenn

                  Gentlemens,
This will be a good prep opportunity before Bummers. This will also be a good opportunity to do some fir per research and stretch your fir per legs.

The preservation march will check your abilities for sustained activity.

Remember, that each participant will select a man from the original roll of the 16th Georgia, Co A and portray that man with respect during the event. Nothing like this has been done in East Tenn to my feeble knowledge in some time.

Please feel free to contact Sean or me if you have questions or if you need some help with historical info. I have access to census data and the sort.

All standards and guidelines are posted in this thread and also on the website.

If you have interest, please let us know soon, so we can construct the company structure.

                              Folks,

The website has been updated this morning.

Early registration ends on Sept 8th, one week from today. (add $2.00)

If you have not paid please do so as soon as possible. See the website for payment options. You can mail it to me or use Paypal.

Also, if you are attending please register and select your persona. Sean and I need to develop the company structure and this also determines some of the roles for the weekend.

There is also a work day scheduled for September 26th. This will be the day to repair the fort and to rebuild the embrasures and redoubts.

Please contact Sean Cooper or me if you have questions about the weekend.

                              Thank You

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The University of Tennessee says it will preserve a portion of a Civil War battle site discovered as crews prepare to build parking and roads for a new sorority row.

Archaeologists found Confederate cannon emplacements and trenches on the 21-acre site between Neyland Drive, Kingston Pike and Alcoa Highway where 13 sorority houses will be built.

The trenches are from the failed Confederate seige of Knoxville and Battle of Fort Sanders in 1863. They represent the only archaeologically confirmed Confederate battle site in the city.

University officials said Monday that about 60 feet of trenches will be preserved and marked, along with the view facing what is now the Fort Sanders neighborhood bordering the Knoxville campus.
